Protoceratops is a genus of sheep-sized (1.8 m long) herbivorous ceratopsian dinosaur, from the Upper Cretaceous Period (Campanian stage) of what is now Mongolia. It is a member of the Protoceratopsidae, a group of early horned dinosaurs. Unlike later ceratopsians, however, it is a much smaller creature that lack well-developed horns and retained some primitive traits not seen in later genera.
Protoceratops are first seen when a Velociraptor named White Tip falls into an area a male and female are nesting. The male gives chase, only to end up in another nesting area where the resident male attacks and fatally injures the intruding one. Another herd of Protoceratops appear as a pack of Velociraptors attack. A pair of females attack while the alpha Blue Brow and the new arrival White Tip eat their eggs until one of the ceratopsians notices, forcing the pack to leave with three eggs. The herd is later seen attacked by the Velociraptor pack, with the same strategy employed, except that Blue Brow and White Tip attempt to kill one of the adults. White Tip pounces while Blue Brow hesitates, but once White Tip is knocked off her target Blue Brow leaps on the resident bull. As the fight progresses the bull bites Blue Brow's hand and then gets his killing claw in the jugular of the bull. Then a landslide occurs, burying the bull and all of the pack except for White Tip, who then leaves the area to the remaining females.
